Does Lumen’s Night Shift Retinal Cause Purging?
Instagram · March–April 2026
Neither creator purged — but neither started the way the box says. Esthetician Nadia Okonjo checked at three weeks specifically because that is when a purge would show, and saw nothing. Priya Raman buffered from the first night and had nothing she would call a purge either. Both went slower than the label suggests.

The three-week window, on rosacea-prone skin
She filmed at three weeks because that is when a purge would have shown.
I’m three weeks in, which is exactly when I’d expect a purge if one was coming, and there is nothing. No little bumps along my jaw, nothing across my forehead.

Right, the purging question. I get this one more than almost anything else, so let me actually answer it properly instead of doing the thing where I say it depends and leave.
Quick definition, because people use purging to mean two completely different things. A purge is your skin turning over faster, so the congestion that was already sitting under there comes up early. It shows up where you normally break out. And it settles.
Irritation is not that. Irritation shows up wherever it wants and it does not settle, it just gets worse until you stop. Those are not the same thing and treating them the same is how people wreck their barrier.

And I want to be fair about why, because I don’t think it’s only the formula. I started two nights a week. I have said this in every video about this serum and I’ll say it again — I did not go nightly out of the gate, and going nightly out of the gate is how most people manufacture a purge that was never necessary.
So my honest answer is no, it didn’t purge me, at a sensible cadence, on skin that purges easily. If you go nightly from day one I genuinely cannot tell you what happens because I didn’t do that.
If you do get little bumps in week two, that’s the window, hold your cadence, don’t escalate. If you get stinging and redness that spreads, that’s not purging, that’s your cue to stop.
Buffering from the first night
She buffers every active, so a purge and a flare would look identical on her.
I never got the little rough patches people mean when they say purging. But I buffered from night one, so I’d say I made it easy on myself.

Someone asked under the two month update whether I purged, and I’ve been thinking about how to answer it honestly, because the honest answer has a caveat in it.
With eczema, a purge and a flare look the same to me. Both of them are my jaw going red and rough. So I can’t always tell you which one I’m looking at, and anyone who says they can, on this skin, I’d be a bit sceptical of.

Buffering is just moisturiser first, wait a bit, then the retinal, then moisturiser again over the top. It slows everything down. Less gets in per night, so whatever the serum was going to do to me, it did more gently and over longer.
Which does mean I probably waited longer for the results as well. That’s the trade and I’m fine with it. I would rather take four months and still have a face.
So — no purge here, but I stacked the deck. Please don’t take my no as a promise for your skin.
Also asked
How long would purging last if it happened?
Neither featured creator purged. Where it does occur it typically shows inside the first two to four weeks — Nadia Okonjo filmed her check at three weeks for exactly that reason.
Is purging different from irritation?
Yes. Purging appears where you already break out and settles; irritation appears anywhere, spreads, and does not settle. Priya Raman notes that on eczema-prone skin the two can be genuinely hard to tell apart.
